It is the end of a lifestyle. Get used to it!
The World around us is changing at warp speed! People are staying home, snuggling in, using the Internet for an exponentially exploding plethora of money saving research, shopping, interactivity. If you are not expanding / tuning your web presence, you may not be here next year. GM fail? Never! (how sure are you?)
People want to depend ontheir synchronous time commitments. If they drive to your business, they want to accomplish their goal. On time, one trip, one visit. No more 'running around.'
This doesn't apply to my business!!! GM could never fail. WaMu could never fail. My business could never fail. The Internet is not changing the world as we know it. I promise you. Now, please excuse me, I need to file these bankruptcy papers.
The recession: 8.1% unemployment so far - pundits predict over 10% soon. Unemployment is the highest it has been in 25 years - and we are just beginning to see the trickle down losses. The depression word is being used a lot already, and we are not near the bottom.
Restaurants and Bed and Breakfasts: Changing world. Reservations will be made online soon - the availability of online reservations will become predictive of those that will survive very quickly.
If your company cannot be found on Google when customers type in your words that describe your business and your general geolocation, you will not be here a few years from now.
If you do not know what an iPhone really is; what Twitter, Facebook, wikipedia, eBay, PayPal are - you are in danger. If you do not know what Google is you have no chance.
Newspapers are pretty much gone. The yellow pages are unused pulp. Your old tried and true marketing vehicles are no more. Major retailers are closing like Venus flytraps sensing a fly.
Watching tv and listening to the radio - the world around us seems kind of similar to what it was 5 years ago (read before the Internet)- business as usual (other than the evening news - and have you noticed that even the news is presenting slice and dice infomercials - not real commercials any more). Yet everything has changed with the explosive incursion of the Internet. This is foundational - not a fad, not a trend. The underlying structure of our (mankind's) interactions with each other, and the World around us has changed profoundly.
Every business needs to critically and immediately reevaluate their market position in the world. It is not what it was 5 years ago! Period. You do not control the position your business holds in the minds of your prospects and clients; and it has changed exponentially.
FDIC is broke. Medicare is broke. GM is broke.
The world economy is shrinking for the first time since WWII.
Facebook, iPhone, app users - leverage then increased intellectual velocity - granularity. We want to pay attention to facebook - so we take it into our experience as a serial novel or serialized movie. There is a lessening place for the blockbuster extravaganza of yesteryear, like Star Wars, BatMan - today the exploding media will be serialized on youtube with a growing following.
